Where does your GPS tracker store its data?

The cloud

Have you ever wondered where your GPS tracker stores its position data, or more precisely, your position data? – no? But you should. For a long time, I wasn’t aware that some GPS trackers send their data to the cloud . But what exactly is the cloud? The cloud can be anywhere. Roughly speaking, the cloud is the Internet or a backup option on the Internet on servers that can be located in any country and can be used by anyone who has access to it.

Isn’t that scary? Of course, this can actually be very helpful if data from the object that you want to protect and the position data are transmitted. But if the data falls into unauthorized hands, it is somehow very unpleasant and also very strange in my opinion. I don’t want others to be able to monitor me. Of course, after the Snowden scandals it is also known that our data is stored and evaluated by certain organizations, but I don’t want to make it so easy for everyone to access my data. In this case, it’s not just my data, but also my movement profiles.

Does a permanent recording suit me?

Therefore, check your GPS devices to see if the position storage works at all. There are now more and more GPS trackers that transfer their data to the cloud and store it there. As already mentioned, this can have advantages but does not necessarily have to. Above all, you have to check whether it makes any sense at all for the specific area of application in which you are using the GPS tracker. A simple transmission via SMS is all I need for my few locations. I don’t need to have my data tracked in a web application or similar location portals.

In most cases, the servers of these tracking portals are also located in very insecure countries. You can often recognize this very quickly from the low price. There you pay the location portal with your data. So make sure that if your TV stores its data on the Internet, it is at least stored in secure countries, preferably in Germany of course. Or ask yourself directly whether we need such a function at all. What do you think?
